Sectigo, formerly known as Comodo CA, is entering the next phase of its transition: it’s replacing Comodo CA roots with USERTrust roots on January 14, 2019. Why it happens and what it will mean to Sectigo customers?
Roots and Intermediates that say “Comodo” need to be replaced as Sectigo is trying to get rid of Comodo branding. As we mentioned above, it’s simply a next phase of its transition. Sectigo will begin using its USERTrust Root CAs, created back in 2000, and newer versions being generated since 2010. Possibly eventually Sectigo will have Sectigo Root CA certificates, but it takes time to get the Root CAs accepted.
As Sectigo said in its statement:
We want to assure all customers and partners that this change will happen seamlessly with no action needed. Your existing certificates, issuing CAs, and roots will remain active and trusted. The new Sectigo intermediates will be used to fulfill new requests, renewal requests, and requests that are pending at the time of this transition. Reissuance requests that are handled directly by Sectigo will be fulfilled using the same issuing CA that issued your original certificate.
If you run a online business, you are sure to use Google AdWords. Perhaps this is one of the main traffic sources on your site, so the last message you want to see is "Your account has been suspended ...". And yet, you can expect it if your site is not SSL-secured.
Starting 1st of August 2016, Comodo and DomenySSL will no longer offer SGC variants of certificates. As your account has a valid SGC certificate which will be up for renewal in the future, the company has prepared a list of recommended alternatives.
Thawte is only one of the few vendors outside of the United States. As the main competitor of American vendors quickly gained a 40 % share of the market SSL certificates.
